What Causes Hip Pain?

Why is it that hip pain runs a close second to nagging joint pain in frequency as we age? Let's take a look at the hip joint to find out.

The ball and socket joint in your hip is the largest in your body. When healthy, it fits together in a way that allows for fluid movement. When you use your hip, for example when you walk or run, a cushion of cartilage helps prevent friction as the hip bone moves in its socket.

We use our hips constantlymore than any other joint in the body! But despite its durability, your hip joint isn't invincible. With age, the cartilage begins to erode and wear down. The muscles and tendons in the hip can also get overused. So if we don't keep our bones strong with exercise, healthy eating, and vitamin D, the bones in our hips can become more vulnerable to falls or injuries.

But hip fractures are not the only thing we need to worry about with age. Many conditions can lead to hip pain, and what almost all of have in common is the same root cause: inflammation. Inflammation leads to wearing down of the hip joint, and once this joint wears down far enough, you end up having to get arthroplasty, also known as a hip replacement. 

A hip replacement is a surgery in which the diseased part of the hip joint is removed and replaced with new artificial parts. So let's talk about what you can do to keep your hips strong and make them less likely to fracture.

How to avoid inflammatory damage to your hips

As we age, it's common to experience small aches and pains in joints throughout the body, but when you feel hip pain, this may warrant a little more concern. Occasional twinges or sharp pain in your hips are red flags that your body is trying to tell you something, and they should not be ignored!

Often our hips are extremely overworked and undernourished over our life time. You're on your hips daily—standing, walking, running, even twisting and turning. This daily wear and tear can eventually lead to bone-on-bone grinding. That is fueled by inflammation.

Many hip replacements may be avoidable by adopting our inflammation-lowering lifestyle. According to Dr. Nancy, lifestyle choices often create and sustain hip pain.
