"We hear a lot about CBD for managing aches and pains... but the jury is still out on its effectiveness."
Today we’re talking about a health topic that has really blown up recently: CBD. This product is everywhere – you can buy CBD oil, tinctures, pills, drinks, candles, candies, gummies, coffee, and more!
If you live in a state where CBD is currently legal, you know that CBD has gone from being a fringe thing to an absolutely ubiquitous product almost overnight. Coffee shops sell CBD lattes, spas offer CBD facials, beauty companies are adding CBD to their formulas. And everyone from your anxiety-ridden coworker to your joint pain suffering neighbor wants to try it. Today, Dr. Nancy Lin, PhD, is exploring this topic and asking… is CBD all it’s hyped up to be?

What is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, a chemical compound in the cannabis sativa plant, which also known as marijuana or hemp.
It's a naturally occurring substance that's reportedly used to promote a feeling of relaxation and calm, pain-relief or other health benefits. But unlike its cousin, THC, another major active ingredient in marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive — which means it doesn’t get you high.
If you follow Dr. Nancy, you know she is always looking for effective natural alternatives to big pharma harmful, chemical based medicines, so it seems like CBD would fit right into her philosophy.
But she’s also a PhD nutritionist and member of the scientific community, who prefers not to rely on hype or anecdotal information. So before recommending it to her clients, she wanted to do the research and determine if this product is all it’s cracked up to be.
We hear a lot about how effective CBD is for managing aches and pains — which over 60 million people in the US suffer from on a regular basis — but the jury is still out on its effectiveness.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the world-renownedneurosurgeon and Emmy winning medical reporter for CNN has followed the CBD science closely for the past 5 years, and he shares some of Dr. Nancy’s skepticism. He continues to question why much of the reported CBD benefits seem to be so short-lived, and even goes as far as to wonder if it could all just be marketing hype.
To date, the FDA has clearly stated that it is not legal to market CBD as a supplement, and it’s difficult to find very many studies that demonstrate clear, long-term benefits of using CBD to manage chronic aches and pain.
Equally concerning for some are the results of a recent CBD study in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) in which researchers analyzed 84 CBD products from 31 companies and found that 70% were mislabeled. Some of the products had no CBD at all; some had too much CBD, and some even had substantial amounts of THC mixed in.
Other studies showed that some CBD products contained dangerous synthetic ingredients, which have been responsible for outbreaks of illness throughout the country. The legitimate vendors of CBD, who take the time to ensure consistency, safety and quality, are now sadly lumped together with the dishonest and dodgy ones, leaving many consumers confused about where to turn.
We definitely urge our readers to be very careful with CBD, as it appears that many marketing companies are putting profit ahead of well-being, and playing a dangerous game by ignoring the FDA’s guidance and warnings on CBD.
So, until there is more conclusive research and evidence surrounding the effectiveness of CBD, we will continue to tout what does work – supported by over 10,000 studies: the amazing inflammation-fighting benefits of turmeric, and and more specifically, curcumin (the active ingredient inside turmeric). In Dr. Nancy’s view, curcumin has been and will continue to be, the #1 all-natural, leading choice for managing overall aches and pains.
The Benefits of Curcumin
Most of you know what turmeric is: the beautiful, golden yellow root or powder that has been used for hundreds, maybe thousands of years inAyurvedic and Chinese medicine for its inflammation-fighting and antimicrobial properties.
Turmeric contains hundreds of beneficial compounds, including fatty acids, fiber, minerals like iron and manganese, and something known as sesquiterpenes, which is a bioactive substance that can helpreduce inflammation.
However themain active compound in turmeric is curcumin and it’s a powerful proven inflammation-fighter with numerous other benefits throughout the body. As our regulars know, any time there’s an option to choose natural compounds over. synthetic pharmaceutical drugs, we recommend that option. In this case, curcumin is a natural supplement that effectively turns off the enzymes in your body that trigger inflammation and pain.
We mentioned that turmeric and curcumin have been widely used in functional medicine, but it’s now making its way into the mainstream medical community as well, especially as a way to address aches and pains in bothjoints and muscles. It’s even being endorsed by several of the leading arthritis foundations as a natural way to help deal with the painful effects of arthritis.
Dr. Nancy’s Curcumin Story
Dr. Nancy can speak to curcumin’s effectiveness, not only through her work as a nutritionist, but also on a personal level, as someone who’s suffered from chronic pain for years. One of the most difficult aspects of dealing with chronic pain is that each individual case is so different — and it’s very common to see variations in duration and intensity of pain. It may feel sharp or dull, or it might come and go — it really is a different experience for every single person. A lot of people, including Dr. Nancy, end up in what’s called a “chronic pain cycle”.
Before she got my chronic aches and pains in her back and hands under control, she really struggled. They would come go, but as she got older, it seemed there were more pain days than pain-free days. She has such a busy schedule — three young kids, career demands, and other obligations — with adding managing pain to the mix, she found everything starting to slip.
She started researching Turmeric supplements, which quickly led her to the discovery of curcumin — which provides a much more therapeutic dose of what her body needed to break the inflammation cycle and get rid of aches. Her research led her toSmarter Curcumin... and 2 years later with over 2 million bottles sold — here’s why Smarter Curcumin is #1.
What Sets Smarter Curcumin Apart
One problem with traditional curcumin supplements is that curcumin is hard for the body to absorb, so Smarter uses only the most active, bioavailable form of curcumin — called 95% tetra-hydro curcuminoids, which goes to work immediately in your body. Because it’s fat soluble, it also comes in a vegetarian soft-gel, dissolved in Black Seed Oil, which is another powerful natural antioxidant and inflammation-fighter in its own right, with a range of other health benefits also supported by hundreds of studies.
Plus it also includes…
- Ginger Root — to further reduce inflammation and help soothe the digestive system. Research shows us that like curcumin, the natural chemicals in ginger work in different parts of the body including the stomach and intestines, and in the brain and nervous system as well, to help tame the flames of inflammation.
- Astragalus — which also has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it’s been used as anadaptogen for thousands of years, activating when you are understress to help avoid inflammation. It is one of the most powerful immune-building plants on the planet, and it’s an essential herb in the daily wellness regimen of top holistic nutritionists.
- Ginseng — used for its beneficial compounds known as ginsenosides. These provide powerful immune support and also promote normal inflammation responses.
Supplementing with Smarter Curcumin every day is essential to help reduce the inflammatory load on your body, and promoting overall health and wellness.
When you walk down the street it appears that CBD is all the rage — it’s being marketed everywhere as the savior for those suffering from chronic aches and pains. And while we might learn down the road that there are scientifically validated benefits of CBD — as there demonstrably are with Curcumin — the current CBD market is unregulated, unproven, and in many cases even unsafe. At this point, the research just isn’t where it would need to be for us to endorse and/or recommend it to our customers.
Instead, stick with what you know to be the absolute most effective plan to promote joint health and mobility by addressing it at the source — inflammation. That’s why Dr. Nancy recommends her powerful plan for discouraging inflammation that includes Smarter Curcumin, plus dailyexercise and movement, basic yoga or stretching, and Dr. Nancy’swhole-food, plant-based anti-inflammatory diet plan.
