MCT Oil for Fat Loss and So Much More!

Posted by Smarter Nutrition on

If you have heard the term “MCT Oil” but really don’t know exactly what it is then let’s get you up to speed on this amazing supplement. You’re about to learn why you should be taking this incredible fat burning accelerator every day.

What’s the Rage About MCT Oil?

MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides which are a type of fat the body uses for energy. The big buzz about MCT oil is that it has been found to help bodybuilders get more definition, helps people lose weight, and helps you think more clearly and feel better overall. MCT oil is commonly consumed nowadays by people on ketogenic diets but you don’t have to be on that specific diet to take advantage of it.

Who Should and Shouldn’t Consume MCT Oil

MCT oil is suitable for most everyone, except those who have liver problems (hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver failure), blood sugar management difficulties, or heart problems. Because MCTs are processed primarily by the liver, it may pose extra difficulties for the liver to metabolize and process it.  Results from studies indicate that those with heart problems should speak to and work with their medical doctors to determine what dosage of MCT oil they should use.

Landmark Study on MCT Oil for Weight Loss

In 2008, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported on 31 overweight men and women who consumed either MCT oil or olive oil. Those who consumed MCT oil had improved weight loss over the four months of the study.

According to the study, these people experienced reduction of body fat from the trunk, belly, and overall throughout the body. Doctors at the Columbia University and New York Obesity Research concluded that MCT oil could be used to enhance weight loss.

Role of MCT Oil and Brain Health

For decades MCT oil has been used to improve brain health for people suffering from epilepsy. The problem with epilepsy is that the brain experiences incidents that disrupt brain function. However, when epileptics ate a high fat diet that included MCT oil, the number of seizures they had were reduced greatly. This repeatable phenomenon gave doctors and scientists the clue that certain types of fats feed the brain in a healthy way, while others could be harmful for the brain. Over time and further testing, this was determined to be true.

Medium chain triglycerides are used as a source of energy for the brain in a healthy way. In fact, your brain loves MCTs so much that users report it rewards you with creativity and clear thinking!

On the contrary, when you use carbohydrates as a source of brain energy, your reward could be less desirable, with symptoms like headaches, mood swings, food cravings, aggressiveness, depression, loss of concentration, feeling jittery, feeling spacey, blurry vision, or dizziness.

How MCT Oil Affects Your Metabolism

MCT oil forces your body to use it for energy – and to burn it quickly. When you consume a low carb, high fat diet, and one of the only fats in your diet is MCT oil, you will burn fat faster than if you don’t have higher levels of MCTs in the bloodstream.

How to Incorporate MCT Oil in Your Diet

Start taking MCT oil at a dosage of roughly one teaspoon per day. You can consume it straight from the spoon, it’s not bitter at all. MCT oil may be added to your coffee, tea or even orange juice. You can cook with it, but not on high heat, so be careful not to burn it because MCT oil has a low smoke point. You can use it on top of your salads, but don’t depend on it for flavor. You can add it to your regular healthy olive oil and vinegar salad dressing as well.

After you have taken one teaspoon daily for three weeks, it’s time to bump up the level to one teaspoon two or three times a day. If you begin to experience loose stools, this is a sign you may need to lower your dose. If not, you can increase to the higher dose.

Now it’s your turn. Try taking MCT oil and enjoy its many the positive benefits for you mind, body and energy. We’d would love to hear your feedback!
